The Ohio Eastern Star Home at Mount Vernon
1451 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050
This facility has several levels of care: independent apartments, assisted living, and nursing care for both intermediate and skilled needs, and a dementia unit.
The independent apartments are both one and two bedrooms, with kitchen, dining area, living room, bathroom and porch. A Founders Fee is required as well as a monthly maintenance fee. All utilities, except phone, are covered with the maintenance fee. The criteria for admission to these apartments is that you must be able to attend to all daily personal and financial needs. There is no nursing help available. There are emergency pull cords, at which time a nurse will respond and either call 911 or a family member. There is also an option of having meals in the main dining room for lunch and dinner, at an additional cost per meal.
The assisted living area is a one room efficiency-type unit that is charged by the day. Food, laundry, nursing care and hair care are all covered under the daily rate. The only additional cost would be for medications. These are all private rooms.
The nursing unit's intermediate/critical care/dementia/skilled areas are both private and semi-private rooms. We are a certified Medicare-Medicaid facility. This assists those who are financially unable to meet the daily rates.

Not only were we recently recognized by the Ohio Department of Aging, but also The Ohio Eastern Star Health Care Center’s Moreland-Hughes Residence was featured in “Trends in Design,” a supplement to Future Age Magazine published by the American Association of Housing and Services for the Aged Association. The Moreland-Hughes Residence was completed and opened in 2005.
A key design directive for the new nursing dementia unit, “The Moreland-Hughes Residence” was to create a household model, truly based on a residential place as opposed to just a “house wrap” interior.
The central core is composed of living, dining/country kitchen, and activity areas that are a series of adjacent spaces in one large area as opposed to individual rooms. Location of the resident neighborhoods adjacent to the “living” cove allows for optimum circulation through a sensory garden. The resident rooms have been laid out to maximize visual accessibility, memory cueing and care flexibility. Residents’ rooms have bay windows that afford beautiful views and additional living space, with private bathrooms equipped with European-style showers. Each resident neighborhood has a private solarium and access to a private family lounge with an enclosed garden for visits. The homelike atmosphere is designed to keep residents with memory loss functioning at an optimum level. 2005 Worthy Grand Matron Jo Ann Hastings and Worthy Grand Patron Cliff Houk’s special project was the Sensory Garden for the Moreland Hughes Residence.
